Client: Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
Guy’s Tower is an iconic building at London Bridge, and forms the heart of the Guy’s Hospital campus. The area around the campus is undergoing significant change, with the Shard being completed but not yet fully occupied and improvements to London Bridge Station ongoing. Patients and visitors were finding access to the hospital becoming increasingly confusing and inconvenient. Tibbalds was appointed to develop a strategy for improving pedestrian access in both the short term, during ongoing construction, and in the longer term once the major developments are operational.
We led a team of consultants, including Aedas R&D and Arups to develop a short-term strategy to improve pedestrian crossing points, open temporary entrances, change traffic movement, including bus only routes, and implement public realm improvements.
This strategy supported a longer-term campus masterplan, which served as the starting point for discussions with Transport for London and supporting bids for further public realm investment into the area.
