Client: London Borough of Southwark
Tibbalds produced a Development Framework for the comprehensive regeneration of the Elephant and Castle in Central London. A key part of this Framework involved the demolition of the 1,100 home Heygate Estate and re-provision of affordable homes within the Borough.
Tibbalds worked with the Council to deliver public sector led regeneration by:
- identifying potential council and privately owned sites for replacement housing;
- testing the development capacity of the sites; and
- producing Design Briefs for each site setting out planning and design requirements and aspirations.
Delivering high quality development was crucial. We helped the Council create a panel of architects, selected for their creative design approach and ability to collaborate successfully with future residents. Design competitions were then held for each site to select the preferred architect. Tibbalds assisted in this process by assessing the design quality of the submissions. We helped residents participate by providing training to volunteer tenant representatives for the selection panels.
