Client: Surrey and Borders NHS Partnership Trust
Farnham Road Hospital is a historic hospital site in a residential area on the edge of Guildford Town Centre, in use for 24 hour mental health care. Tibbalds was appointed as planning consultant, and strategic masterplanning advisor to SABP with its development partner Laing O’Rourke and its healthcare architects, Devereux.
To achieve the Trust’s healthcare aims, refurbishment of listed buildings and significant new build were required. This included demolishing a curtilage listed building with some heritage significance. Tibbalds advised on:
- appointing specialist consultants – archaeology, historic buildings, ecology and arboriculture;
- providing design advice on building layout and massing to minimise impact on this sensitive site’s heritage;
- a robust planning strategy for securing planning permission and listed building consent; and
- the material required for a convincing application package.
We worked closely with the design team, planning officers, and wider stakeholders, to steer the proposals smoothly through the pre-application and application processes. The project was successfully granted permission in December 2010 and has progressed to Full Business Case and enabling works prior to construction.
