Tibbalds has considerable practical experience of producing design codes and guides for masterplanning projects. This research project was an opportunity to review the effectiveness of codes throughout England in securing good design. As such, it provides a useful source of good practice examples for all practitioners, and continues to inform the codes and guides we develop for new projects.
Working with University College London (UCL), Tibbalds was commissioned to carry out a three-year programme of research. We investigated 19 case studies, some of which were already built, some being tracked from the earliest stages. UCL took responsibility for those case studies that had involved Tibbalds, including Lighmoor Village and West Silvertown (with Gardner Stewart Architects).
We developed our research findings into the CLG publication ‘Preparing Design Codes: A Practice Manual’.
