Client: Stoke-on-Trent City Council, Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council
The conurbation of Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme has been struggling to secure high quality development and their Councils wanted to achieve a step-change in the quality of design. Tibbalds was appointed to prepare a Strategic Urban Design Vision and Design Guide.
Working closely with consultation specialists Urban Vision, Tibbalds devised a programme of engagement with key stakeholders ranging from design professionals to local people. This helped to identify the key challenges to securing good quality development, and develop solutions and a strong vision.
Tibbalds produced a guide that achieves the twin goals of being aspirational and inspiring, whilst also providing pragmatic, practical advice to developers and their design teams on how to achieve design quality without compromising development viability. We did this by creating a clear overall strategic vision for the area, supported by detailed design guidance for specific types of development and urban situations.
The Guide has been adopted as Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPD) by both Councils.
