An alternative planning scenario

Opinion piece

Join Neil as he talks about the upcoming in-person RTPI Planning and Housing conference he will be speaking at, telling us more about Community-led housing as a starting point for planning.

On April 26th, I will be taking part in a half-day conference discussing an alternative approach to planning for housing, focussing on citizen involvement and collaboration across boundaries.

It will be an in-person event in Leeds and of interest to planners, designers, architects and anyone keen to explore local and regional innovation in housing and place-making. You can sign up for the event via the RTPI website here.

I will be speaking both as a planner at Tibbalds but also as a member of Same Skies – a citizen-led regional democracy think tank for West Yorkshire – and drawing on my PhD research at the University of Leeds. This looks at existing and emerging models for collaborative housing that give citizens more control and generally aspire for better quality, affordable and fulfilling housing that meets local and diverse needs.

Neil will be speaking at the in-person RTPI Planning and Housing conference on 26th April 2022, talking more about Community-led housing as a starting point for planning and alternative ways of approaching planning and plan-making through closer collaboration with the community and across geographic and administrative boundaries.
