Outline planning permission for Hackney Wick Central masterplan

Outline planning permission has been granted for the Hackney Wick Central masterplan. The LLDC’s design team included Karakusuevic Carson Architects and Witherford Watson Mann Architects with Tibbalds advising on heritage matters.

This is a major regeneration project located on the western fringes of the Olympic Park in Hackney, which developed during the late nineteenth century for innovative industries such as early plastics, petrol and dry cleaning.

The site is allocated in the Local Plan for comprehensive regeneration to provide a new mixed use neighbourhood centre to serve existing and new areas of housing. It falls within two Conservation Areas, also including several individual heritage assets.

The approved proposals will deliver around 900 new homes, 36,000sqm of employment space as well as new public realm improvements and community facilities.

Our role included advising on the masterplan; ‘telling the story’ to Historic England and LLDC officers; and the parameter plans and design code. We produced a comprehensive heritage assessment and input into the Environmental Statement to accompany the OPA.

Our approach was based on a detailed assessment of the character and appearance of the Conservation Areas and the significance of the individual heritage assets. The masterplan aims to harness Hackney Wick’s existing assets to create a sustainable framework for its future development.

The Hackney Wick Central masterplan won the 2016 NLA Masterplanning Award and received a Commendation for the Mayor’s Award.
