Planning consent granted for sensitive Hornsey Road site in Islington
Following a minded to grant decision at planning committee in October 2018, 179 Hornsey Road was officially granted planning consent on 18th July 2019.
The application was prepared and submitted by Tibbalds on behalf of Volunteering Matters – a charitable organisation providing opportunities for residents across the UK to participate and engage with their local community through volunteering and social action. This approval has enabled Volunteering Matters to continue a number of charitable programmes within Islington and across London through the disposal of the Hornsey Road site.
The proposal re-provides refurbished community floorspace and brings a currently unoccupied building back into meaningful use through the provision of nine much needed family homes. The design was principally led by the retention of the existing locally listed school house, which required a certain level of creativity to ensure the most efficient use of the site.
The proposal consists of three elements, the retained building and new extension and a new build block to the west of the building. The new build elements introduce a high quality contemporary design, whilst enhancing the historical merit of the existing building.
