Characterisation

The character of a neighbourhood, town or city is made up of many different elements – from street patterns, to the natural landscape, locally distinctive architecture, building materials, community culture, and social demographics. Our understanding of these elements as well as how they all interconnect and work together, is used to provide detailed character assessments which act as practical tools to shape the future development of a place.

Our expertise in urban design informs our very specific spatial and analytical approach to character assessments, developed over a number of years. Used as a tool to recommend the level of change and influence detailed proposals, this tried and tested method has repeatedly stood up to scrutiny. By identifying the most important contributions to a place’s distinct character, including those that are valued locally, our assessments help inform proposals, avoid standard solutions, and foster a strong sense of identity.
